It is splashing. It is grotesque & roaring. Yet, it is here to stay and not ebb. I wouldn’t be surprised to find these chapters in the next edition of “Basics and Beyond” by Judith Beck. A chapter on values, one on context and of-course integration of BCT with mindfulness. Beck’s Cognitive Therapy(BCT) and Ellis’s REBT has been the second wave of therapies. Most of it. BCT &REBT are adaptive therapies. The second wave therapies have always been adaptive. Above all, they have added a lot of functions and processes from other therapies. If you go a little in the past. The first wave of behavioral therapies were more characterized by operant & classical conditioning. Followed by the second wave pioneered by Beck and Ellis. Second-wave integrated beliefs and thoughts. Trying to change the behavior and emotional experiences. The third wave of therapies even if under the umbrella of CBT. Moreover, they have a different underpinning of science. Let us learn them better. If we plan to surf these waves. Let us break the experience in parts. Knowing the undercurrent of waves better. Know the tools – our surfboard better. And the getting ready to fall a little. Until we strike a balance.
Knowing the undercurrent.
The third wave is simple. Once you know it is based on a different science. Science though can be a bit complex. Based on how you relate to science. This relation to the subject is actually the underpinning. Relational frame theory. When I started learning about the third wave. Being a science student I never knew that there are different types of sciences. Different types mean foundationally different. Not branches. Chemistry, physics, etc. Yes, there are different foundation of sciences. So most of our learning maths, engineering. Let us all the schooling, education, based on science called Elemental Realism. The second wave therapies are based on the same.
The underpinning of the third wave therapies though is different science. It is Functional contextualism. Sound complex but relatively easy. At least I am trying to make it sound easy. But functional contextualism is the science on which the third view third wave is roaring on. If you want to surf on the third wave of therapies we should understand the science behind it. The underpinning behind it. Even if to drive a car you don’t need to understand the engine. The same can be with the third wave of therapies. But know the undercurrents can be way more powerful. is very powerful And a minimum necessary to understand.
Next Internship Starting June 15
Know your surfboard.
If you have read to this part I’m sure you have you are very much interested in science. Smart therapist. Relatively. I hope you got the relational response there. If you are a practicing second wave therapist like me. I am sure evidence-based therapies are your passion. However, third-wave therapies evolved on process. Process backed by evidence. They shoot as process-based therapies. So what is the difference? Evidence-based therapies usually focus on signs and symptoms. Evidence-based therapies have protocols for symptoms. There can be classification if there is a cause. There is a mechanistic course of the disorder. Finally, an intervention that could change the course of the disorder.
Process-Based therapies understand that functional processes give rise to different manifestations. A manifestation can arise from many different functional And contextual processes. Also important is to understand the conceptual toolkit. The toolkit is different on which these therapies are based like ACT. The toolkit has the tools from evolutionary principles. The other tools are from Behavioral principles. They are based on functional context and of course RFT Relational Frame Theory. Our surfing board will consist of these tool kits.
Boarding the wave.
If you plan to board this third wave. Stay put. until you read this after that it’s all about flexibility. The first step definitely is to keep updated with undercurrent. An understanding of how the wave is moving. That is the underpinning of this third here matters the most. And start with basic learning of RFT. Understanding of evolutionary principles and read more about functional contextualism. Start with your own examples of therapies based exercises. Know what the therapy model is and start using on self. It is ok to jump back on the earlier model of BCT. I still do sometimes. And I have not thrown BCT with the bathwater.
I tell this rollercoasters story to my clients. Two friends go to an amusement park. At the center of the park, there is a huge rollercoaster. The moment they both see this rollercoaster both of them look at it. One friend John gets pretty excited and ran towards the queue. The second friend Matt skeptical and slow approaches the queue. Here I take a pause and ask. As he joins his friend what do you think is John & Matt experiencing right now? And then you know the answer. That is right. So how do you plan to approach this rollercoaster?
You can register for our upcoming Mini-workshop about the third wave of therapies. The ACT of Surfing the Third wave.
